Joan Jett and Foo Fighters Nail “Bad Reputation”
“Godmother of punk”, Joan Jett, joined Dave Grohl and Foo Fighters this week performing Jett’s early 80s solo hit (and TV’s Freaks and Geeks theme song) “Bad Reputation” on David Letterman here. The super charged Tuesday night performance reprised Jett’s appearance with Foo Fighters last Sunday at the latter’s Madison Square Garden gig. Both performances showed that Jett (53) is as energetic and vocally sharp as ever.
Still performing with her long-time band The Blackhearts, Jett was recently nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and has been active in the music scene over the years signing and developing bands with her long time partner Kenny Laguna, and making numerous guest appearances on recordings and live performances as well as radio (Joan Jett’s Radio Revolution on SIRIUS Satellite Radio was a particular treat).
The pairing with Foo Fighters seems to make total sense now, though the only connection between Grohl and Jett in the past was Kim Fowley — producer for Jett’s teen-age band The Runaways — who wrote the KISS song “Do You Love Me”, covered by Nirvana.
