GWAR: Alive and Well!
Jimmy Fallon has hosted all kinds of music on his show, but seeing Gwar perform their latest topical ditty “Hail Genocide” here from current album, Bloody Pit Of Horror, this past Friday takes the cake… and it was Gwar’s second appearance on Fallon!
Gwar and I go back, I suspect further than either of us care to look. When I was at Enigma Records in the late 80s producer and A&R friend, Ron Goudie — who was recruiting “talent” for Metal Blade Records (a subsidiary of Enigma) — begged me to go to the nearby Troubadour to see this “great” band Gwar. I walked out half-way through the show, my sensibilities of what constituted musical talent shaken.
How does this band keep on keeping on after more than 25 years! Every night they have to put on the cumbersome goth/space costumes and make up, grab the swords and chain saw, and trudge out of some grungy godforsaken dressing room to do it all again! Then there are the endless tours like the Rock & Shock Festival, Sounds Of the Underground tour, and Gathering of the Juggalos.
I suppose you could say Gwar are just another band like KISS… except they’ve not come close to KISS in terms of popularity, wealth, or status. They certainly have one thing in common though. I guess a good sense of humor goes a long, long way. See Gwar on their current tour!
