Lady Antebellum’s Genre-Blurring Success
The lines between pop, rock, and country music continue to blur as this performance of “We Owned the Night” here by Lady Antebellum on Jay Leno last Friday attests. This rockin’ follow-up to the Top 10 Billboard hit, “Just A Kiss” — from their third album, Own the Night — is currently skyrocketing up the country charts. It hardly sounds like a country record though… and therein lies the appeal of Lady Antebellum.
Breaking out of Nashville just 3 years ago with the number 3 Country hit “Love Don’t Live Here”, the trio of Charles Kelley (lead vocals), Dave Haywood (guitar, piano, mandolin), and Hillary Scott (lead and background vocals) has been on a non-stop chart-topping ride that has seen Lady Antebellum win numerous awards including 5 Grammy’s and as many CMA’s (primarily for “Need You Now” from their second album of the same name).
You can see all the dynamics and stylistic reach of Lady Antebellum’s talent in this Leno performance. And, while they certainly have country in their name (antebellum is a pre-civil war architectural style from the American south), make no mistake Lady Antebellum is a mass appeal phenomena. Catch them on their headlining tour that ends in mid-December.
