KT Tunstall Walking Her Own Path
Diminutive Scottish singer-songwriter, KT Tunstall performed the sassy, biting, “Madame Trudeaux” from her latest album, Tiger Suit, on Conan last night here. Using her trademark “Wee Bastard” Akai E2 Headrush loop pedal, Tunstall thrilled the jacked-up Conan audience — her solo performance sounding more like that of a full band.
It turns out that Tunstall, who burst upon the world scene in 2005 with the Billboard Top 20 pop hit, “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree”, is not a slave to the radio or any other pigeon-holing media device. Over the course of 4 studio albums, a Christmas EP, and recently released acoustic EP, The Scarlet Tulip, Tunstall has recorded acoustic pop, hyper-rhythmic electronica, power punk, and folk… with the intensity, uniqueness, and abandonment of a true artist.
All the while, the half-Chinese, half-Scottish Tunstall, who famously was adopted at 18 days by parents who had no interest in music, has spoken her mind about Dido’s voice (“can’t fucking sing”), climate change (supporting Global Cool), and politics — publicly disowning her stepfather for deciding to be a candidate for the British National Party. She surprised her gay fans when she married her drummer, Luke Bullen, in 2008.
