Death Cab For Cutie: Crown Jewel of Indie Rock

Making their second recent talk show performance last night on Conan (check out “Title Track” on Jimmy Fallon from May 17th), Death Cab for Cutie performed the first single, “You Are A Tourist”, from their just released 7th album, Codes And Keys. Typical of founder and singer-songwriter, Ben Gibbard’s trade-mark quirky melodic hooks and plaintive vocals, “You Are A Tourist” will not disappoint Death Cab fans.

Since Death Cab for Cutie first received national attention from the indie music press in 1998, Gibbard has delivered a consistent brand of intellectual, sensitive, and carefully crafted rock which eschews the mainstream but appeals to a sizable, music intensive fan base that references alternative radio sounds from the 80s and 90s and classic singer-songwriters like Neil Young, Paul Simon and their descendants such as Elliott Smith.

The years have been kind to Death Cab as the band has sustained and grown in popularity with the journeyman cycle of releasing albums and touring. They’ve been nominated for Grammy’s and their 2005 album, Plans, sold platinum in the U.S. Gibbard’s marriage to actress/singer Zooey Deschanel in 2009 made perfect sense – a match made in indie heaven. If you want to see the crown jewel of the indie music scene at their peak, don’t miss Death Cab on their current tour.
