Neon Trees Stand Tall

Provo, Utah band Neon Trees performed the third single, “Your Surrender”, from their major label debut, Habits, on David Letterman this week. In the wake of their first single, “Animal”, which topped the Billboard Alternative and Hot AC charts, “Your Surrender” has a similar pedigree — a gigantic chorus derivative of so many pop hits.

This band is obviously going places. It’s not hard to get caught up in their high energy, contagious alt pop. But it’s the unique, consistent drive in Tyler Glenn’s voice, gliding above the bands metronomic cadence (thanks to cute drummer Elaine Bradley), that delivers their well-crafted songs. Glenn has the kind of pipes that Bono and Brendan Flowers are blessed with. And there’s not a trace of insecurity or reluctance in his front-man role.

Though it’s common knowledge among Neon Trees fans, it bears repeating here that it was The Killers drummer, Ronnie Vannucci Jr. who “discovered” the band and brought them to Mercury Records after doing a stint of dates opening for The Killers. Supporting “Animal”, Neon Trees did the talk show circuit, performing for Leno at least twice. They’ve also done Daryl Hall’s Live From Daryl’s House, a prestigious opportunity among musicians from diverse musical genres. Neon Trees are out on tour now doing plenty of spring and summer dates. Catch them if you can!
