Obscure Band Wire Gets Boost on Fallon

Curious to see the vintage underground English band Wire on Jimmy Fallon this week. Here’s a band that has survived in relative obscurity since 1976 when they debuted as a seminal English punk band. I promoted Wire to radio when I worked for Enigma Records in the late 80s and can attest to their critical praise and commercial limitations.

Wire’s biggest charting single “Eardrum Buzz ” from the 1988 album, A Bell Is a Cup…Until It Is Struck, benefited from Enigma’s hard-working young mish-mash of interns and experienced staff. On Fallon, Wire — who has not been to the states in many years — performs a couple songs from their 12th album, Red Barked Tree, which was digitally released last December. This appearance is probably the biggest exposure Wire has ever had in the American media.
